SFU Surrey is throwing open its doors May 28th to showcase its new 54,000 sq ft Podium 2 tech-science learning and research space during the university’s Annual Open House.
With the equal-portion $10million provincial and federal knowledge and infrastructure grant, SFU Surrey has increased its capacity by 5% and finally brought together all its 300,000 sq ft of world-class programs and research in one centralized area of City Centre.
No new physical structures were built to house the programming moved from the Tower to the interconnected main campus area on top of and in front of, the Central City Shopping Mall. With double the applications to SFU Surrey in the last 3-4 years, mostly in science and technology, this expansion responds to the significant interest in post-secondary education in the South Fraser Region.
The Podium 2 opening also includes the launch of the landmark International CyberCrime Research Centre with its strong ties to the RCMP and the City.
From 11am to 4pm, it’s an action-packed day of fun activities for all ages, from hot bands to henna painting to high-end rock climbing and kids’ crafts.
“This is truly a celebration of Simon Fraser’s interconnectedness with the community, commercial sector, and the City of Surrey,” says Mathew Grant, SFU Surrey’s Director of Marketing & Communications. “This is a very different model than we normally see in a post-secondary institution, which nurtures a wonderful mingling of cultures.
“Something very special is happening here. This area is a catalyst for growth and the nucleus of BC’s next great downtown core. SFU is very proud to be part of this phenomenal transformation.”
