The Surrey Urban Farmer’s Market (SUFM) takes place between 1 and 6 PM every Wednesday at the North Surrey Recreation Centre. “Our goal is to provide our community with farm fresh food, tasty treats and access to local artisans,” said Market Manager, Melissa Balfour. “We also support local farming and want to encourage everyone to eat local as much as possible.”
The SUFM offers a unique twist to what you would normally see at a farmer’s market. It is located in the heart of Surrey’s new downtown and includes delicious food trucks including Old Country Pierogi, Hearthstone Meats, and Aussie Pie Guy. Accessible by foot, transit and car, the market is a convenient place to bring colleagues, friends and family. Children will be thoroughly entertained at the Kids Mini Play Market and will enjoy the exciting Scavenger Hunt. You will never go home empty handed with the extensive line-up of farmers showcased every week. From delicious vegetables and leafy greens from Lea Lake Farms to Rockweld Farm Ltd.’s meat, poultry and eggs, the market even offers specialty foods such as award winning cheese and butter, dried soup and salad mixes, and fair trade artisan chocolates.
In an effort to give back to the community, the SUFM is partnering with Umoja Compassion Society, Oak Avenue Neighbourhood Hub and Families and Youth Program to provide Farmers Market Nutrition Coupons and fresh food to families and seniors in need.
Sixty families and 20 seniors have gained access to healthier options because of the SUFM and the program continues to grow each year. To get involved with the Surrey Urban Farmer’s Market, sign up as a volunteer at http://surreymarket.org/index.php/volunteers/.
