Enjoy 12 hours of musical fun at the Music Marathon in Central City Shopping Centre Plaza, on Friday August 11, from 8am to 8pm!

Come out and support local pianists as they tickle the ivories!

With the success of Music Marathon from last year, the Downtown Surrey Business Improvement Association has decided to do another one this year. This year, Music Marathon took place in the heart of Surrey City Centre, at Central City Shopping Centre’s outdoor plaza, along 102 Avenue. The one-of-a-kind Canada 150 themed piano is placed in an outdoor public space. Why? To transform parts of underutilized areas into a more vibrant metropolitan space. The theme for this year was none other than ‘A classic Canadian summer day’. This included elements of bountiful picnics on a relaxing lakeside day.

The DSBIA organized for pianists to play for twelve hours straight, from 8 am to 8 pm on Friday, July 21st. These pianists, hailing from different parts across the Lower Mainland, played different styles of music back-to-back for a stream of daylong entertainment. Although the weather was not in our favour, nothing could have depleted the Downtown Surrey spirit.

Highlights included Peter Tam, a JUNO nominee who played original songs. Peter even brought his own instruments, the tambourine and rock shaker to make it more fun. Other pianists specialized in classical music, while others played all Korean music. The “marathon” even featured our one and only Theatre Troupe, who sang and danced along to some of the pianists.

The open area just so happened to be surrounded by seating so there were many people that sat down for a few minutes to half an hour. Others caught their breath and smiled while on the go. Many took the time to stop and take photos and videos of the talented pianists. Our aim to create a more vibrant and engaged downtown city was made a reality by having talented pianists as well as engaged audiences.

In case you missed our first Music Marathon, we will be having another one on Friday, August 11th, 2017 from 8am to 8pm.
