Community Conversations: Becoming Better Allies to the LGBTQ2+ Community

Community Conversations: Becoming Better Allies to the LGBTQ2 Plus Community

Date: June 17, 2021

Time: 6:00PM – 7:30PM PDT over Zoom

During the month of Pride, conversations about how we can support LGBTQIA2S+ members of our community in Surrey are especially important. How can we create more inclusive and safe spaces for the LGBTQIA2S+ community?

The Downtown Surrey Business Improvement Association’s presents the first of five bi-weekly Community Conversations that will be taking place throughout the summer.

Community Conversations aims to bring community members to engage in purposeful and meaningful conversation about the future of our community. Previous conversations have included the housing crisis, supporting BIPOC businesses, and food security.

Through facilitated discussions following a presentation from our guest speaker, we will be diving deeper into the barriers that members of the LGBTQIA2S+ community face, as well as how these issues can be challenged.

Our guest speaker is Jen Marchbank (she/her). Jen Marchbank is a Professor of Gender, Sexuality & Women’s Studies at Simon Fraser University. At present she is researching resiliency in trans youth; LGBT experiences of elder abuse; LGBTQ2SIA+ youth in Surrey; and trans youth and mobility access in Surrey. She is also the co-founder and facilitator for Youth 4 A Change and a former Surrey Pride President.
