Surrey Voices: Caribbean Art, Dancing, and Music

Would you like to experience live steel drumming performances and learn more about Caribbean culture?

Join the Downtown Surrey Business Improvement Association for the second of three Surrey Voices events that will be taking place throughout the summer!

Surrey Voices is a new series of 3 events that will take place weekly at Holland Park’s amphitheatre. Each week, a different culture will be showcased in the afternoon through 90 minutes of storytelling, dancing, music, and art. The events will have a COVID-19 safety plan and will host a maximum of 50 people who must be registered in advance in order to attend.

The musical group Sweet Pan is all about Canadians playing the steel drum, ‘pan’, the only acoustic musical invention of the 20th century, and clearly a major Caribbean contribution to world culture. They specialize in Caribbean rhythms on the many different sizes of drums and have played for dances, weddings, corporate events, community events and interactive concerts since 1994. Their leader & arranger, Bernard Fernandes, draws on his vast repertoire and experience of the Caribbean to lend both an innovative & authentic touch!

‘The Bahama Showgirl’ Androsia Wilde infuses the glitz and glamour of a Vegas-style showgirl with the rhythms and flavours of her home, The Bahamas. She has set stages across the province ablaze since 2014 with her charms and exuberance, such as the Vancouver International Burlesque Festival and Shambala Music Festival. Androsia is passionate about representing her heritage through dance, and sharing that joy with an audience to get them movin’!
