Saturday, June 19, 2010 marked the 12th Annual Whalley Community Festival and an estimated 10,000 people passed through the Festival site on this breezy summer day. Due to construction of the new Surrey Public Library, the Festival was held at the Central City Plaza with the B-Boy competition held in the North Surrey Rec Centre.
The annual pancake breakfast, put on by the North Surrey Lions Club, was extra delicious this year. With chocolate chips donated by Charlie’s Chocolate Factory, the Lions were able to make extra special treats for anyone with a sweet tooth.
Local bands The Wheat in the Barley and All About Jack were also part of the main stage lineup where they had the audience moving to their unique blend of Celtic/Slavic music or singing along to familiar tunes, respectively.
Over on the Plaza stage, bellydancer Nicole Whitney, as well as dancers from Yvonne Walters Country Dancers, Classic Steps Dance Studio and Hawaiian Sunset Dancers entertained the crowd full of dancers and non-dancers alike.
The Youth Zone boasted a thrilling competition between B-Boy dancers as they fought for the position of “Last Beat Standing”.
Hosting over 90 vendors, with anything from food to crafts, the 12th Annual Whalley Community Festival was a great success. We want to again thank all of our sponsors for the continued support these last 12 years. This Festival would not exist without you!
We would also like to thank our amazing volunteers for making sure the Festival ran without a hitch. A special shout out to the Phoenix Red Shirts, who were on site from before the pancake breakfast at 9:30am until clean up after Chilliwack’s performance.
This event also would not exist without the wonderful support from the community itself. Without all of the attendees, the Festival site would be a stormy desert, tumbleweed and all. Thank you again and we hope to see you next year for lucky number 13!
