Community Conversation: Homelessness vs “Houselessness”: Bridging Empathy for the Marginalized

October 20 @ 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM

The Downtown Surrey Business Improvement Association is excited to bring you another important issue to the Community Conversations table. In collaboration with the Phoenix Society, our second topic uncovers how communities can work towards de-stigmatizing the negative labels associated with homelessness, mental health and drug abuse. What is the difference between being homeless and being “houseless”? Does race and ethnicity play into an individual’s exposure to vulnerabilities? And as communities, what can we do to bridge empathy with those facing these vulnerabilities? Join the Conversation on Tuesday, October. 20 from 7:00pm-8:30pm. Learn how you can remove barriers within our community! Register FOR FREE today!

The Downtown Surrey BIA is honoured to have Keir Macdonald, Chief Executive Officer of the Phoenix Society, as our upcoming speaker for Community Conversations. Keir was born in Canberra, Australia and is a graduate of the Australian National University where he holds a Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Laws and a Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice. Recently, Keir also completed his MBA at Simon Fraser University. After practicing law in Melbourne for several years, Keir and his wife relocated to Vancouver in 2010. He held multiple leadership positions with BC Housing, and went on to become the Deputy Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer at the Lookout Housing & Health Society. Today, Keir’s work at the Phoenix Society aims to provide accessible services to people who face barriers related to addiction, mental health and homelessness. He focusses his passions on responding to Canada’s drug poisoning crisis, and strives to create a true continuum of care for those who are most vulnerable in our communities.
