The world-renowned Beijing Shadow Play Art Troupe is coming to Surrey to stage a series of performances and workshops in celebration of the upcoming Chinese New Year. Shadow Play is a dramatic storytelling performance in which silhouettes made of leather shapes known as “shadow puppets” are projected onto a white screen. The performer manipulates the puppets and light source behind the screen while singing or telling the story accompanied by fanciful music. The Beijing Shadow Play Art Troupe combines China’s rich cultural history of song and word into amazing storytelling performances, which are celebrated by children and adults alike. The Troupe’s Chinese New Year performances will take place on February 20 & 21, 2015 with 60-minute theatrical performances taking place in Surrey’s beautiful new state-of-the-art theatre Centre Stage at City Hall. There are also workshops taking place following the performances at Surrey’s Central Library, where participants will meet the troupe and make their own shadow puppets. The workshops are planned for both children and adults, with craft materials supplied for the kids. Any participating adults can purchase authentic leather shadow puppets provided by the troupe and learn about this revered art. There will also be free Chinese New Year performances in the Atrium at City Hall prior to the Shadow Play shows, with traditional Chinese dancers and singers from Hua Xia Multiculture Society whose choir, music and dancing groups are dedicated to supporting the community through performing arts.
